Confused by the ‘smart casual’ dress code? Read this now to know what to wear

Smart casual is one of the most common yet confusing dress codes. Its ambiguous nature makes it problematic when selecting an outfit. Here’s a list of guidelines on what you should be wearing and how to style them. Before starting to plan any outfit you should always consider these three things:

Where is the event held? If you haven’t been, look up the venue. You can judge a lot by its décor.

The demographic of attendees - who will be there?

Ask yourself whether what you’re wearing would be appropriate for another dress code.

What are the key issues the fashion industry is facing, from a sustainability perspective? Have those issues changed since you originally launched the Copenhagen Fashion Summit?

“When we did the first Copenhagen Fashion Summit in 2009, we launched a 10-year plan of action, and those areas [including CO2 emissions, waste, water usage and ethical labour practices] are actually still relevant. So a lot has not changed, although a lot has also changed. Topically, it’s still some of the same issues, but the innovation and the solutions have [moved forward]. Sustainability is not a philanthropic quest; it’s how you can future-proof your business model to become more resilient.”

You’ve moved the Copenhagen Fashion Summit to October because of the coronavirus pandemic. The theme is now ‘redesigning value’ — what was the thinking behind that?

“It’s an important discussion for [the] industry to have: what is the value of our industry in society, but also what is the value of a product? We’ve all been affected by the pandemic; our lives have [already] been changed dramatically. Will we just go back to producing four big collections a year and celebrating them as runway shows, or is it going to be a much leaner and more dynamic model going forward?”

How critical is the Copenhagen Fashion Summit as a forum for these discussions?

“It’s become increasingly important. We’ve really felt how this topic [of sustainability] has caught on in a big way, globally. Last year, we had 800 companies on a wait list because we had sold out. Even though I appreciate what Zoom can do, for events such as this, the in-person meetings [are useful]. If you want to create a revolution, it’s also about people feeling empowered by being with other people who are on the same path.”

For example, if it is bordering on ‘cocktail’, then reconsider.

Pants

Tailored pants are a reliable go-to for when you’re really lost on what to wear. Start with a pair of well-cut pants and the rest of your outfit should work around them. Don’t be afraid to wear patterns. Depending on the occasion, if you want an edgier look, a stretch leather pant or a patterned pant is a possibility. Match them with a longer length shirt and a smart jacket such as a blazer.

When it comes to jeans, tread carefully depending on the event. Dark wash jeans such as an indigo or black can be appropriate. Match with a classic blouse or silk shirt and heels; the style of your top and your shoes should be more formal to balance out the denim (so not a time for T-shirts). If you’re not certain about the occasion, always pick a tailored pant instead.

Jumpsuits

Jumpsuits are a great way to make a statement and are an easy go-to look with little thought required. Whether it’s patterned or plain, smart casual events are the perfect occasion to pull them out of your wardrobe.

Skirts

Pencil skirts to the knee are a classic option, but don’t be afraid to experiment with other styles such a mid-length patterned skirt in a lighter fabric in warmer months. Determine your occasion for the night and consider what would be appropriate and what you should leave for another occasion.

Dress

If you opt for a dress make it a simple one; keep your embellished cocktail dresses at home. Style it with accessories such as a bold necklace and a strappy pair of heels. If you’re considering a maxi, be aware of the colour and fabric – too relaxed-looking, and it’s better saved for a pool side event.

Shoes

Avoid informal footwear and stick to heels. Shoes with a thicker heel are a great (comfortable) option for an event where a stiletto isn’t appropriate. If you decide to wear a stiletto chose something with a shorter heel height.

Don’t forget…

Lengths can be short but not too short.

Attention to detail. Choose accessories that will take your outfit from day to night.

Utilise jewellery to dress up a plain outfit.

Smart casual is all about the separates – a dress isn’t necessary, so try a skirt or pant combination instead.
